Construction began in June 1957 by the Takenaka Corporation. At least 400 workers were on the site every single day. The tower was finished in 1958 and opened to the public on December 23. It cost 2.8 billion yen to build at that time.

When it was done, it was the tallest freestanding tower in the world. It held this title until the Tokyo Skytree was finished in 2012. The tower is 333 meters tall, but it weighs only 4,000 tons. This is much lighter than the Eiffel Tower.

Today, most people visit the tower for fun and tourism. The base of the tower has a building called FootTown.

While it once handled many analog television broadcasts, the system changed in July 2011. During that time, Japan transitioned to digital broadcasting. Because the tower is not tall enough to send high-frequency digital waves past skyscrapers or through forests, it was eventually surpassed by the Tokyo Skytree. The Skytree was completed on February 29, 2012, to handle these newer digital needs. However, Tokyo Tower still supports several FM radio stations today.

Visitors to the tower experience several distinct areas and stages of observation. The journey usually begins at the base in a five-story building called FootTown.

This building houses various restaurants, gift shops, and attractions. From the first floor of FootTown, guests take elevators to the Main Deck. This is a two-story observation area located at 150 meters. For a higher view, visitors can pay for an additional ticket to reach the Top Deck. This smaller deck is located at 250 meters, positioned just below the digital broadcasting equipment.

Some adventurous visitors even choose to climb the 660 steps of the outside stairwell to reach the Main Deck.

The history of Tokyo Tower is tied to Japan's recovery after World War II. In the 1950s, Japan was experiencing a postwar boom and wanted a monument to symbolize its national recovery. Hisakichi Maeda, the president of Nippon Denpatō, originally wanted a tower taller than the Empire State Building. However, a lack of funds and materials prevented that plan. Instead, the height was set at 333 meters to reach the necessary distance for broadcasting across the Kantō region. This distance is approximately 50 kilometers. The designer, Tachū Naitō, drew inspiration from the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Construction of the tower was a massive engineering feat involving specialized workers called tobi. These are traditional Japanese construction workers who specialize in high-rise structures. The Takenaka Corporation broke ground in June 1957. Every day, at least 400 laborers worked on the site. Interestingly, one-third of the steel used for the tower was recycled scrap metal from US tanks used in the Korean War. When the antenna was bolted into place on October 14, 1958, Tokyo Tower became the tallest freestanding tower in the world. It took the title from the Eiffel Tower by 6 meters. Despite being taller, Tokyo Tower weighs only about 4,000 tons. This is 3,300 tons less than the Eiffel Tower because its construction is thinner and simpler.

Maintaining such a large structure requires constant care and specific schedules. The tower must be repainted to prevent wear and to maintain its bright colors. Traditionally, this repainting happened every five years and took one full year to finish. However, a new, more durable coating was used during the 2019 painting project. This new material has extended the official schedule to every seven years. Because of this change, the next major painting project is projected for 2026. This upkeep ensures the tower remains a clear reference point in the Tokyo skyline.

Today, the tower's significance has shifted from purely technical to primarily touristic. While it remains a member of the World Federation of Great Towers, its main income comes from antenna leasing and tourism. The tower has seen massive visitor numbers, reaching its 190 millionth visitor in 2024. Although visitor numbers dropped to 2.3 million in the year 2000, they have risen steadily since then. The tower continues to be a prominent landmark that frequently appears in media set in Tokyo. It stands as a symbol of both technological progress and the city's enduring history.
