Sensō-ji is a very famous Buddhist temple in Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan.
To enter the temple, you pass through large, important gates. The first gate is the Kaminarimon, or "Thunder Gate."

Legend tells us how the temple began a long time ago. In the year 628, two brothers named Hinokuma Hamanari and Takenari were fishing. They found a small gold statue in the Sumida River. This statue represents Kannon. A village leader named Haji no Nakatomo became a monk after this. He turned his own home into a temple. In the year 645, a monk named Katsumi worked on the temple. He had a dream that led him to keep the statue a secret. Because of this story, the statue is never shown to the public.
The history of the temple includes many changes and rebuilds.
Sensō-ji is a place where history and daily life meet. It is the 13th stop on the Bandō Sanjūsankasho pilgrimage route. Many people go there to participate in the Sanja Matsuri festival. This is a large festival that happens in the late spring. The temple grounds also have a quiet Japanese garden. Visitors can also visit o-mikuji stalls. For 100 yen, you can shake a stick to find an answer to a question. It is a place of both busy markets and quiet prayer.

The Kaminarimon is a very imposing Buddhist structure. A massive red-and-black paper lantern hangs from its center. This lantern is very heavy and features a metallic base.
Beyond the first gate lies the Hōzōmon, known as the Treasure House Gate.
Legendary accounts describe the temple's mysterious origins in the Asuka period. In 628, two brothers named Hinokuma Hamanari and Takenari were fishing in the Sumida River. They discovered a small gold statue of Kannon. A local headman named Haji no Nakatomo became a monk and converted his home into a temple. In 645, a monk named Katsumi renovated the site. Following a dream, he designated the statue as a hibutsu, or a secret image. The statue is only about 5.5 centimeters tall. Because it is a secret, the public never sees it.
Throughout history, the temple has faced many challenges, including several fires. In 1590, Tokugawa Ieyasu designated Sensō-ji as an official place of prayer. He granted the temple 500 koku of land. The buildings were destroyed by fire in 1631 and 1642. However, the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, helped rebuild the pagoda and main hall. The temple also suffered during the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake. Most significantly, a firebombing air raid on March 10, 1945, destroyed the main hall and the pagoda. The main hall was eventually rebuilt between 1951 and 1958.
Today, the temple complex features several distinct structures and traditions. The main hall is dedicated to Kannon and features a modern titanium tiled roof. This roof is lighter and stronger than traditional materials while maintaining a historic look. There is also a stately five-story pagoda on the grounds. For those seeking guidance, o-mikuji stalls offer paper fortunes. For a donation of 100 yen, visitors can shake a stick to receive an answer to a question. The temple is also the center of the Sanja Matsuri festival. This large event takes place over several days in late spring.
