A tower is a very tall structure. It is much taller than it is wide.

Towers are different from regular buildings. People do not live inside them to sleep or eat. Instead, people build them to use their great height for special jobs.

A clock tower makes a clock easy to see from far away. A castle tower helps guards watch the land around them. Some towers are used for fun or for sending signals. They can even stand alone or be part of a bigger building.

Building a tall tower is a hard job. The weight of the material can become too heavy for the bottom. To fix this, many towers taper. This means the tower gets thinner as it goes up toward the sky.

This helps the structure stay strong under its own weight. Wind is another big problem for tall things. A tower needs to be stiff so it does not break in the wind. Many towers put their support parts on the very outside. This makes the whole structure much stiffer and stronger. Some towers even use a tuned mass damper to stop them from shaking.

Humans have been building towers since prehistoric times. The oldest known tower might be a stone circle in Jericho from 8000 BC. Long ago, people in Sumer built ziggurats. The Ziggurat of Ur is a famous example from the 3rd millennium BC. In northern Scotland, people built conical tower houses called brochs. The Romans used different shapes like octagonal or square towers. For example, Diocletian's Palace in Croatia has octagonal towers from about 300 AD. In China, towers were part of the Great Wall starting in 210 BC.

There are many famous towers around the world today. The Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy was built between 1173 and 1372. In Italy, there are also the Two Towers of Bologna and the Towers of Pavia. In Tibet, people built the Himalayan Towers during the 14th and 15th centuries. Modern towers do many important tasks. The CN Tower in Toronto, Canada, helps send and repeat signals. Telecom towers often use a lattice structure to stay steady in the wind. These shapes help spread out the weight of the tower.

We see the work of towers in many parts of our lives. Towers can help us move things using gravity. A water tower or a storage silo uses gravity to move liquids down. Even ski-jump ramps work this way if there is no natural hill. Towers also support big bridges, like suspension bridges. Some towers even help us reach the sky. We use launch towers for rockets or cranes to build things. Towers can even be used as art or as symbols in stories.
