It is designed to enclose a burial chamber for one or more people. This chamber might be located entirely above the ground. It can also be a vault hidden below the main structure. Inside, a body might rest in a stone box called a sarcophagus. Sometimes, people use small niches to hold ashes in jars called urns.

If a building is a monument but holds no remains, it is called a cenotaph.

These structures can work in many different ways. Some mausolea are permanently sealed to protect what is inside. Others act as columbaria, which are spaces specifically for cremated remains. You might find them in a cemetery or a quiet churchyard. In the United States, the term can also describe a burial vault under a church. For example, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles has a crypt mausoleum. This lower level holds 6,000 spaces for different types of remains.

The name for these buildings has a very long history. The word comes from the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. This was a massive tomb built for King Mausolus in ancient times. He was a leader in a place called Caria. His tomb was so grand that it was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

While they were once mostly for great leaders, smaller ones became popular for noble families too.

Many famous mausolea exist all around the world today. In India, the Taj Mahal is a very well-known site in Agra. In Turkey, the Anıtkabir serves as a monument for Atatürk. This site is very popular and attracts about 3.5 million tourists every year. In Egypt, you can find many different styles, including the pyramid-shaped Unknown Soldier Memorial. These sites serve as important places for people to visit and remember history.

Building a mausoleum is a way to honor a person's life. They are often built for people who changed the world. This includes kings, queens, and even the first presidents of new nations. For instance, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V in Morocco honors a king. In the Philippines, the Rizal Monument honors a national hero. These buildings connect the past to the present by keeping a person's memory alive.
