Rock-cut architecture

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Rock-cut architecture is a special way to make buildings. Instead of stacking bricks, people carve structures directly into solid rock.

This method was very hard work for ancient builders. They had to use heavy tools to shape the stone. This art can create temples, homes, or tombs. Some people call these structures caves or caverns. However, a natural cave is not rock-cut architecture. It only counts if people carved the rock themselves.

Builders used clever ways to stay safe while working. They often started carving at the roof first. Then, they worked their way down to the floor. This helped prevent heavy stones from falling on the workers.

Some buildings are made from just one single piece of stone. We call these monolithic structures. The Ellora Kailasanathar Temple is a famous example. Another huge example is the Gommateshwara statue. It was carved from one block of granite in 983 CE.

This way of building has a very long history. Some early tombs in Europe were cut from rock during the Neolithic period. In Egypt, the Great Temple of Ramesses II was made around 1280 BCE.

This temple is located near the Nile in Nubia. In the 8th century BCE, the Phrygians made the Midas monument. The Lycians in Turkey also carved hundreds of tombs. These tombs were usually small on the inside. In India, the Barabar caves date back to the 3rd century BCE. They were used by Buddhist monks for living and sleeping.

Many famous sites exist in different parts of the world. In Jordan, the city of Petra has temples carved into orange rock.

These structures were built between the 1st century BCE and 2nd century CE. In China, the Longmen Grottoes have hundreds of caves. Most of these were built between 460 and 525 CE. Ethiopia also has the famous town of Lalibela. It has 13 rock-hewn churches from the 12th and 13th centuries.

These churches are some of the last big examples of this art.

Rock-cut buildings often hold beautiful art inside them. Many have paintings called frescoes on their walls.

Some carvings are on the outside of the rock. These are called rock reliefs. Because the rock is so strong, the art stays safe. The climate inside the rock helps protect the colors. The Ajanta Caves in India have well-preserved paintings. The Bamyan Caves in Afghanistan have very old oil paintings from the 8th century CE.
