The way people build shows their religion and culture. Many famous styles come from Hindu, Jain, Buddhist, and Sikh traditions. Other styles include Indo-Islamic, Rajput, and Mughal architecture. Early builders used wood for their structures. However, wood rots or becomes unstable over time. Because of this, the earliest surviving buildings are often rock-cut. These are temples carved directly into solid stone.

Hindu temple architecture has very specific parts. The most important part is the inner sanctuary. This room is called the garbhagriha, or "womb-chamber." It holds the main statue of a deity. On the outside, a tall tower sits above the sanctuary. This tower is called a shikhara. In northern India, temples often use the Nagara style. In southern India, they use the Dravidian style. Other regional styles like Vesara or Kalinga also exist.

Very old cities tell us about early life. The Indus Valley civilization lived near the Indus River. This group lived from 2600 BCE to 1900 BCE. They built remarkable cities like Mohenjo-daro and Harappa. These cities had great planning and engineering. They used fired mud-bricks to build houses. Most houses had two storeys and a uniform plan. They even had many brick-lined wells.

Different empires changed how India looked. The Delhi Sultanate brought Indo-Islamic architecture to the land. This style mixed Indian and Islamic features. Later, the Mughal Empire reached a high point. The Taj Mahal is a famous part of their work. During British rule, European styles like Gothic Revival arrived. This led to the Indo-Saracenic style. This style mixed Indo-Islamic and European ideas together.

Modern times brought even more new ideas. After India became independent, architects used modernist ideas. The government asked Le Corbusier to design Chandigarh. This influenced many architects in the 20th century. Today, economic changes help shape new urban layouts. India's buildings connect its ancient past to the modern world. From rock-cut caves to new cities, the history is huge.
