Early builders used wood. But wood rots or breaks over time. Most old wood buildings are gone now. Instead, many people carved temples from solid rock. These are called rock-cut temples. They belong to many faiths like Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain.

Hindu temples have special parts. The most important part is a small room. This room is called a garbhagriha. It is a "womb-chamber" for a god. Outside, a tall tower sits on top. This tower is called a shikhara. In the north, towers use the Nagara style. In the south, they use the Dravidian style.

Later, new styles arrived. The Mughal Empire made beautiful buildings. The Taj Mahal is a famous example. Some buildings mixed Indian and European styles. This created the Indo-Saracenic style. In modern times, architects use new ideas. They build cities like Chandigarh. India's buildings show many different ways of life.
