These buildings follow the ideas of Buddhism. This faith began in India a long time ago.

There are three main types of buildings. First are monasteries, called vihāras, where monks live. Second are prayer halls, called chaityas. Third are stupas. A stupa is a round structure. It was made to keep sacred items safe. One very old stupa is in Vaishali, India.

Another famous site is Sanchi. A king named Ashoka helped build it.

As Buddhism spread, the buildings changed. In Indonesia, people built Borobudur. It is a massive stupa that looks like a stepped pyramid.

It is the largest Buddhist temple in the world. In Thailand, temples are called wats. They often have golden towers shaped like bells.

In Hawaii, Japanese immigrants built temples in new ways. They did not have the same tools as they had in Japan. Some people turned large houses into places of worship. Others used concrete to make new buildings. These temples help people stay close to their faith.
