The first jewel is the Buddha. He is a teacher who reached enlightenment. Some believe there are many Buddhas from the past and future. The second jewel is the Dharma. This refers to the teachings of the Buddha. These teachings help people understand the world. The third jewel is the Sangha. This is the community of followers. It usually means monks and nuns. Some groups also include lay people.

Different schools of Buddhism see these jewels in different ways. In Chan Buddhism, people look for the Buddha inside themselves. They see the Buddha as awareness. They see the Dharma as truth. They see the Sangha as purity. For others, the Buddha is the most important refuge. He is seen as a lasting and eternal guide.
