This is a religious practice used to show deep faith. It often begins with a prayer or a recitation. People do this at the start of a day or a practice session. The goal is to live a life centered on the Three Jewels. These are also called the Triple Gem or Three Treasures.

Taking refuge is a way to show determination. It is a choice to follow a specific spiritual path.

There are three main parts to this refuge. The first part is the Buddha, who is a fully enlightened teacher. The second part is the Dharma. This refers to the teachings that the Buddha shared. The third part is the Sangha. This is the community of followers who practice the teachings. The Sangha is often the monastic order of monks and nuns. However, it can also include lay people or even heavenly beings.

These three supports help guide a person toward enlightenment.

Different schools of Buddhism have different views on these jewels. In the Theravada and Mahayana schools, people focus on the Triple Gem. The Vajrayana school uses an expanded formula. This includes the Three Jewels and Three Roots. In Mahayana Buddhism, the meaning of the jewels changes. The Buddha is seen as having three bodies. The Dharma is described as a reality that brings an end to suffering. The Sangha includes many advanced beings like bodhisattvas.

These beings help others on their spiritual journeys.

Some texts discuss which refuge is the most important. The Śrīmālā Sūtra says the Buddha is the ultimate refuge. It describes the Dharma and Sangha as partial refuges. This is because the Buddha is not bound by time. The Buddha has limitless compassion for all beings.

Another text, the Ratnagotravibhāga, says the Buddha is an eternal refuge. It suggests the Dharma is like a boat used to cross a river. Once you reach the other side, you may not need the boat anymore. The Sangha is also seen as something that still has work to do.

Some traditions look for the jewels in a different way. In Chan Buddhism, followers look inward. The Platform Sūtra teaches that people should find the Buddha within themselves. In this view, the Buddha is your own awareness. The Dharma is the truth you find. The Sangha is the purity of your nature.

Other sources say the three jewels are not actually separate. They can be seen as one single substance. This idea suggests that the jewels exist within the Buddha-nature itself. This helps explain how the path leads to a deep sense of peace.
