In some Buddhist traditions, a Buddha has three parts. One of these parts is called the Sambhogakāya. It is known as a subtle body of limitless form. People also call it an enjoyment-body.

This body is very special. It is used to teach others in unique ways. It helps people see things through visions. This is a way to share deep wisdom.

Buddhas use this body to teach advanced followers called bodhisattvas. Some famous examples are Bhaisajyaguru and Amitābha. Other figures like Avalokiteśvara and Manjusri also use it.

They show themselves in specific places called pure lands. These lands are created to help other people. It is very easy to hear and practice the Dharma there. The Dharma is the teaching of the Buddha.

People can be reborn in these pure lands. This happens through devout prayer. The prayer helps move some merit to the person. Merit is like a huge stock of spiritual goodness.

One such realm is called Akaniṣṭha. This is an extra-cosmic realm. It is different from other pure abodes. It is a place that completely transcends them. This shows how vast these spiritual worlds can be.

In Tibetan Buddhism, there is a very interesting idea. It is called the rainbow body. An advanced practitioner may experience this near death. They might stay in a cave or a small tent.

For about a week after death, their body transforms. It becomes a Sambhogakāya or a light body. Only hair and nails are left behind. This is a very rare and special event.

Different groups see this idea in different ways. In Chan Buddhism, people use metaphors to explain it. This includes Japanese Zen traditions. The Platform Sutra gives a special meaning. It says the Sambhogakāya is a state of mind. In this state, a person naturally produces good thoughts.

This links the different parts of a Buddha together. It connects the mind to the physical world.
