Many monks live a life of mendicancy, which means they rely on others for food. Every morning, they go on an almsround to receive food from local people. They are not allowed to ask for things directly. In some traditions, a monk may only own four items. These items are a razor, a needle, a bowl, and a water strainer. Some monks even go through stages, starting as novices before becoming fully ordained.

Jain monks and nuns follow five great vows. These include being truthful and practicing non-violence, which is called ahimsa. To avoid hurting tiny insects, some monks carry a special broom to sweep the path. Others may wear a cloth over their mouth. They often travel barefoot and do not use machines or electricity. Some Jain monks in the Digambara tradition do not wear any clothes at all.

A man named Benedict of Nursia lived a long time ago. He is known as the founder of Western monasticism. Around the year 529, he started the great Monte Cassino. He wrote a set of rules for how monks should live together. These rules focus on three main ideas: stability, obedience, and conversion of life. Monks follow these rules to help them work and pray.

Monastic traditions connect many different parts of the world. In India, traditions like Hinduism and Jainism have existed for a very long time. In the West, many groups like Catholicism and Anglicanism have monks. Even in Mongolia, there were once over 110,000 monks living together. These different paths all share a common goal. They seek to step away from worldly things to focus on something greater. Whether through study, manual labor, or meditation, monks seek a special kind of peace.
