A bhikkhu is a male member of the Buddhist monastic community.

This community is known as the Sangha. Monastics live simple lives to help them meditate and reach nirvana. They follow many rules called the prātimokṣa or pātimokkha. These rules guide how they act and live every day. The word bhikkhu literally means "beggar" or "one who lives by alms."

This is because many monastics live on gifts from others.

Becoming a monk involves several steps of training. First, a person becomes a novice, known as a śrāmaṇera. These students follow ten specific precepts or rules. A person under age 20 can be a novice but not a full bhikkhu.

After training, they can seek full ordination called upasampada. This makes them a fully ordained monastic. Some people take these vows for their whole life. Others may leave the lifestyle and return to it later. In Tibetan Buddhism, people often take different steps at ages six, fourteen, and twenty-one.

This way of life began with the historical Buddha. He was once Prince Siddhartha, who left a life of luxury. He lived as a wandering mendicant to study spiritual things. His serious students also chose this simple lifestyle. These early monastics traveled from town to city throughout the year. They only stayed in one place during the rainy monsoon season. This time is called the Vassa.

Different Buddhist traditions use different sets of rules. East Asian Buddhism often follows the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya. Tibetan Buddhism follows the Mulasarvastivada Vinaya.

In Japan, things changed during the 9th century. A monk named Saichō believed some rules were too hard to keep. He started a school that used different vows. Later, in the 1870s, the Japanese government changed rules about marriage and food. This meant many Japanese clergy became different from the traditional bhikkhu.

Monks also wear special clothing called kāṣāya. These robes protect their bodies from the weather. The color often depends on what dyes are easy to find nearby. In Tibet and the Himalayan regions, monks often wear red.

In Myanmar, the robes are often reddish brown. In India and Sri Lanka, they wear yellow, ochre, or orange. In China, Korea, and Japan, they may wear gray or black. Some monks even make their own robes from donated cloth.
