He was known for having very new ideas about faith. He wanted to change how people saw religion in his home country. He also shared these ideas with people all over the world. He believed that people could find deep truth through simple practice. His work helped many people think about spirituality in a fresh way. He was a very important thinker in the 20th century.

His way of teaching was very focused and calm. He taught a method called anapanasati, which is watching your breathing. He wanted people to follow a simple rule: do good and avoid bad. This was his way to help people purify their minds. He did not like using many fancy rituals or complicated rules. Instead, he focused on quiet awareness and deep research. He studied old texts to find the most important truths.

Buddhadasa was born in 1906 in a place called Ban Phumriang. His father was a shopkeeper with Chinese roots. His mother was from Southern Thailand. In 1926, he decided to leave his normal life to become a monk. He went to Bangkok to study, but he did not like it there. He thought the temples were too crowded and focused on status. In 1932, he moved to a forest area to start Suan Mokkh.

He had some very different ideas that many people debated. For example, he did not believe in the idea of rebirth. He thought the idea of a soul being reborn was not part of Buddhist teaching. He believed the goal was to reach nibbana, a state beyond all suffering. He also thought all religions were inwardly the same at their core. He studied many systems like Taoism, Hinduism, and even science. He even developed an idea called "Dhammic socialism" to talk about society.

His influence can still be seen in many places today. He inspired many artists, activists, and even political leaders in Thailand. His writings are so vast that they fill a whole room in the National Library of Thailand. Some of his famous books include "Handbook for Mankind" and "Mindfulness With Breathing." He passed away in 1993, but his forest retreat remains a special place. Many international students still visit to learn about his peaceful ways.
