He was a poet and a writer too. He also started a special group called the Sōtō school of Zen. People call him many names, like Dōgen Kigen or Eihei Dōgen. He spent his life looking for the truth about how we live. His ideas are still studied by many people today. His work helps people understand how to find peace.

His main teaching was a way of sitting called zazen.

This is a type of meditation where you sit very still. He called this practice "just sitting." It means sitting in a way that is very alert. You do not try to think about specific things. You also do not try to push thoughts away. Dōgen called this "non-thinking." It is a way to be present with everything exactly as it is.

As a young man, Dōgen wanted to be a monk. He joined the Tendai school in Kyoto when he was thirteen.

He had a big question about what it means to be enlightened. He did not find the answer at Mount Hiei. In 1223, he took a dangerous trip across the sea to China. There, he studied under a master named Rujing. Rujing taught him to "cast off body and mind."

Dōgen returned to Japan around 1227 or 1228. He wrote a short book called the Fukanzazengi to help others.

He faced some hard times with other religious groups in Kyoto. Because of this, he moved to the mountains in 1243. He founded a temple called Eihei-ji in the Echizen province.

He wrote many important books there, including the Shōbōgenzō. This was his most famous and largest work.

Dōgen's life shows how one person's search can change a tradition. He believed that zazen was for everyone. It did not matter if you were rich or poor. It did not matter if you were a man or a woman. He wanted everyone to experience the peace of sitting. Today, Eihei-ji is still a very important temple.
