Some people call all seated Buddhist meditation zazen. In Japan, the general word for meditation is meisō. This practice is very important to many people. It helps them focus their minds. Different groups have different ways of doing it. Some use it to find peace. Others use it to understand the world.

There are several ways to practice zazen. Some people follow their breath to stay calm. This is called anapanasati. Others repeat a short phrase in their minds. This phrase might be a mantra or a koan. Some people use a method called shikantaza. This is also known as silent illumination. In this way, a person stays aware of everything around them. They do not focus on just one thing. They let thoughts pass by without getting stuck on them.

This tradition has a very long history. Early Chinese Buddhist sources mention sitting meditation. A famous translator named Kumārajīva lived from 344 to 413. He translated a book about sitting meditation. Later, a master named Zhiyi lived from 538 to 597 CE. He wrote important works on this topic.

Different schools have developed their own styles over many years. The Rinzai school and the Sōtō school are two main examples. They each teach zazen in their own unique way.

In a Zen temple, people often sit together in a hall. This hall is called a zendo.

Practitioners sit on a cushion called a zafu. This cushion might sit on a flat mat called a zabuton. Some people sit in a full-lotus position. Others might use a half-lotus or a Burmese style. You can even sit in a chair if you need to. To start, a bell is rung three times. To end, the bell is rung once or twice.

When you sit, your body follows a specific shape. You keep your spine straight and erect. Your hands form a shape called the cosmic mudra. This means your thumbs lightly touch each other. Your eyes are half-lowered so you are not distracted. You might breathe from your hara, which is your belly.

Some people also practice walking meditation called kinhin. This helps them move while staying mindful. Zazen connects sitting still with being aware of life.
