People often sit in a hall called a zendo. They sit on a cushion named a zafu. Some people sit in a lotus position. This means their legs are crossed. Others might use a chair to sit.

There are many ways to do zazen. Some people focus on their breath. They might count their breaths to stay calm. Others repeat a short phrase. This can be a mantra or a koan. A koan is a special phrase used in study. In the Sōtō school, people practice shikantaza. This means they just sit. They do not focus on any one thing. They let thoughts pass by like clouds. In the Rinzai school, people often use koans. Before they sit, people may bow. They might ring a bell to start. They may also do walking meditation called kinhin. This helps them stay aware while moving.
