There are many ways to practice Chan meditation. Some people use a sitting posture called zuochan. Others might use a method called nianfo. This often involves chanting the phrase "Namo Amituofo." Some followers use gong'ans or huatous to help them think. Many monasteries also include walking meditation and chanting sutras. They might also study sacred texts or follow special rules.

Some people call the early years the Legendary period. This time includes the famous figure Bodhidharma. Another important person was the sixth patriarch, Huineng. He is the main person in the Platform Sutra. Later, the Literary period saw the creation of gong'an collections.

Chan has many different stages in its history. One scholar named Andy Ferguson describes three main periods. These go from the 5th century to the 13th century. Another scholar named John R. McRae looks at four phases. He notes a Proto-Chan phase from about 500 to 600 CE. The Early Chan phase lasted from about 600 to 900 CE. During the Tang dynasty, Chan took on a clear shape.

Chan is part of a much larger world of ideas. It grew from Mahāyāna Buddhism and may have been influenced by Daoism. Some scholars say Chan is a natural evolution of Buddhism under Taoist conditions. This tradition spread far beyond China. In Japan, it is known as Zen. In Korea, it is called Seon. In Vietnam, it is known as Thiền.
