Zen is a special branch of Mahayana Buddhism.

It began in China during the Tang dynasty. This tradition grew by mixing Indian Buddhist ideas with Chinese Taoist thought. Some people call it the Chan school. Others call it the Buddha-mind school. This name refers to the pure mind that lives inside everyone.

Many stories say a monk named Bodhidharma brought these ideas to China. From there, the tradition spread to many different places. It became Zen in Japan and Seon in Korea. In Vietnam, it is known as Thiền.

Meditation is the most important part of Zen practice.

A very common way to meditate is called zazen, or sitting meditation. Some Zen teachers focus on finding a sudden awakening. They call this seeing one's own Buddha-nature. This means seeing the true, pure nature of your own mind. Some schools say you can find this insight very quickly. They believe you do not need many long steps to get there. You simply turn your attention inward to find the light of your own awareness.

There are many different ways to practice in Zen. Some people use the "five methods" to help still the mind. These include mindfulness of breathing and practicing loving-kindness. Other teachers suggest a more direct path. They might say you do not need many special rules or steps. They believe you can find enlightenment in very ordinary moments.

One famous idea is that you can find peace while eating or walking. Some texts even say that simple daily tasks are enough. This is sometimes called having "nothing to do." It means living a calm and natural life.

History shows that Zen has many different voices.

Early texts like the Platform Sutra are very important. Some masters were quite bold or unconventional. They sometimes even questioned the need for sitting in one place. They believed that true seeing was more important than following strict rules. Other schools stayed closer to traditional Buddhist ways. They used chanting, rituals, and the study of holy books. Most Zen schools today use a mix of these different ideas.

Today, the word "zen" is used in two different ways. It is a proper noun when talking about the Buddhist religion. However, people also use lowercase "zen" to describe a feeling. If someone says an attitude is "zen," they mean it is peaceful and calm. The word was even added to the Merriam-Webster dictionary in 2018.
