The Rinzai school is one of three main branches of Zen Buddhism in Japan.

It is a part of the larger Mahayana Buddhist tradition. This tradition draws ideas from ancient Indian texts called sutras and shastras. Rinzai also follows the teachings of Chinese Chan Buddhism.

Many people believe the school focuses on seeing one's true nature. This special experience is called kenshō. Practitioners use different tools to help them reach this goal. They want to use their awakening to help all living beings.

Training in the Rinzai school is known for being very strict and rigorous.

A main practice is zazen, which is seated meditation. During zazen, students might use breath counting or mantra practice. They also use koans, which are special riddles for the mind. Students study these koans in a specific order to pass them. They must often memorize certain phrases or poems to answer them. After studying, students have private meetings with their teachers called sanzen.

These meetings help the teacher guide the student toward kenshō.

The history of Rinzai in Japan began many centuries ago. The Chinese Linji school was first brought to Japan by a monk named Myōan Eisai.

He traveled to China in 1168 and again in 1187 to study. Later, a teacher named Nanpo Shōmyō helped start the Ōtōkan lineage in 1267. This lineage is the only one that survives today. Many famous masters helped the school grow in Japan. Two important masters were Shūhō Myōchō and Musō Soseki. They helped Rinzai develop its own unique Japanese identity.

During the Muromachi period, Rinzai was very successful in Japan.

This was because the shōgun and the samurai class supported it. The school even had a system of five important temples. These temples were located in places like Kyoto and Kamakura. One famous temple in this system was Nanzen-ji. Some monks in this system worked for the government. They were well educated and helped run state affairs. However, some other monasteries stayed in rural areas and kept more freedom.

In the 1700s, a famous teacher named Hakuin Ekaku helped revive the tradition.

He was a major figure who taught many regular people. His work helped create the Rinzai we see today. Hakuin's students, like Tōrei Enji, wrote important books about Zen.

Tōrei wrote a famous book called the Undying Lamp of Zen. Today, Rinzai has about 15 different branches. The largest of these is the Myoshin-ji line.
