He lived in China during the Tang dynasty. People are not quite sure when he was born. Some records suggest he was born in 864 CE. He became a monk while he was still a boy. He studied under a teacher named Zhicheng in Jiaxing. Later, he sought deeper wisdom from Reverend Muzhou Daoming. He eventually found enlightenment after studying with Xuefeng Yicun. This master was a very important figure in Chinese history.

Yunmen was known for a very special way of teaching.

He often used sudden shouts to teach his students. He sometimes used a staff to strike them. This helped them think in new ways. He was also famous for his "One Word Barriers." These were very short and sharp answers. Sometimes he would use only a single word to answer a question. For example, he once answered a question with the word "Guan!" which means a barrier. These short answers were meant to help people find truth.

His life changed when he met a powerful king.

The ruler Liu Yan of the Southern Han kingdom met him. The king was very impressed by Yunmen. He gave him protection and help. Yunmen became the head priest at the Lingshu monastery. Soon, many people wanted to visit him. People came from all over China and even from Korea. This became too loud for him. In 928 CE, he asked the king for help. He built a new monastery on Mount Yunmen. He took his name from this mountain.

His school was very successful for a long time. The Yunmen school was one of the five major Chan schools. It flourished for about 300 years. Many of his students became enlightened. He had about 790 disciples in total. Later, his school was joined with the Linji school. Even so, his ideas did not disappear. His teachings were collected in books like the Blue Cliff Record. One famous saying of his is "Every day is a good day." This phrase is still used by teachers today. His lineage continues through masters like Xuyun.

Many different people find interest in his work today.

Some famous writers have used his stories. The writer Jack Kerouac wrote about his ideas in a book. Even a composer named John Cage used his words in music. In stories, a character named Ummon appears in a science fiction series. His short, puzzling stories are called koans. These are still used to help people study. Yunmen's life shows how one person's ideas can travel through time. He turned simple words into deep lessons for the world.
