He lived a long time ago, from about 538 to 597 CE. Many people call him the founder of the Tiantai Buddhist tradition. He was a master of meditation and a great teacher. He helped bring many different Buddhist ideas together into one system. Some historians even compare his work to other great thinkers in world history. His ideas helped shape how people practice Buddhism in East Asia.

Zhiyi had many new ways of looking at Buddhist teachings. He used a holy book called the Lotus Sutra as his main guide.

One of his most famous ideas is the Threefold Truth. This idea joins three different truths into one single view. He also created a way to explain all other Buddhist teachings using the Lotus Sutra. This helped make the different ideas much easier to understand.

Zhiyi's life had many big changes and important moments. He was born into the Chen family in what is now Hubei province. When he was seventeen, he lost his parents and his home. He became a monk when he was eighteen years old. At age twenty-three, he met a very important teacher named Nanyue Huisi.

Under Huisi, Zhiyi learned many ways to practice meditation. He eventually became a leader and moved to Tiantai mountain to study.

He wrote several books that are still used today.

His most important books are called the "Three Great Works of Tiantai." One of these is the Great Cessation-Contemplation. This book gives step-by-step instructions for how to meditate. Another work is called the Profound Meaning of the Lotus Sutra. A student named Guanding helped record and save these many lectures. Guanding was one of Zhiyi's thirty-two direct disciples.

Zhiyi's work changed Buddhism in many different countries. The Tiantai school spread from China to Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. In Japan, this tradition is known as Tendai Buddhism.

His teachings also helped other groups like Zen and Pure Land Buddhism. Even today, many people study his writings for their deep meaning. His system was very good at adapting to new times and cultures. His legacy lives on through the many people who still follow his path.
