The main goal is to find and stay in the ultimate ground of existence. This special state is called the basis. Many people seek a direct experience of this basis. It is a way to find the wisdom and kindness inside the mind.

There are three main parts to the Dzogchen path. The first part is the Base. The Base is the original state of existence. It has three qualities: emptiness, clarity, and compassionate energy. The second part is the Path. This involves using meditation to understand the mind's pure nature. The third part is the Fruit. The Fruit is the realization of one's true nature. This leads to a state called complete non-dual awareness.

Dzogchen began in Tibet around the 7th to 9th centuries CE. This was during the time of the Tibetan Empire. Some scholars think it is a Tibetan development. Other scholars say it uses ideas from Indian sources. The earliest texts appeared in the 9th century. These are called the Eighteen Great Scriptures. They belong to the Mind Series. They are linked to Indian masters like Śrī Siṅgha and Vimalamitra.

Teachers divide Dzogchen into three different series. The first is the Semdé, or Mind Series. This series teaches that the mind is the basis of all things. The second is the Longdé, or Space Series. This series focuses on emptiness. The third is the Menngaggidé, or Instruction Series. This series is seen as the most direct way to realize the truth. Today, the Instruction Series is the most common one people practice.

One important idea in Dzogchen is the difference between knowledge and not knowing. Knowledge is called rigpa. Not knowing is called ma rigpa. Ma rigpa is like a cloud covering the sun.

It hides the true nature of things. Practitioners work to move past this unawareness. Some believe this path can lead to a rainbow body at death. This symbolizes reaching full Buddhahood.
