He is known as a nomad who received special teachings. These teachings include Sutra, Tantra, and Dzogchen. Dzogchen is also called "Great Perfection" or Ati Yoga. Many people see him as the first person to receive these full teachings. He is seen as a wellspring for many mind teachings in Tibet. Some thinkers call him a mythical figure or say he is historically hard to prove.

His teachings focus on the nature of the mind. He taught that the mind is the original Buddha and Ultimate Reality. This state is beyond birth and cessation, which means it has no beginning or end. He compared the mind to the sky. To practice, he said people should use meditation to let this natural state be. You should not try to seek anything or change it. Instead, you should just let it be as it is.

Stories about his birth are very different. One account says he was the son of Su-dharmā and a daughter of King Upa-rāja. This happened in the land of Uddiyana. Another story says his mother was a woman named Su-dharmā near lake Kutra. In the Nyingma tradition, his birth was a miracle. It says he was born to a virgin daughter of the king of Odiyana. This story even says he recited Dzogchen tantras as soon as he was born.

Garab Dorje passed his wisdom to many others through a long line of teachers. His chief disciple was a man named Manjushrimitra. Before they were teacher and student, Manjushrimitra tried to debate him. Manjushrimitra lost the debate and realized his own errors. Later, the teachings reached Padmasambhava through a chain of teachers. This chain included Śrī Simha, Jñānasūtra, and Vimalamitra. Garab Dorje also received Mahayoga teachings from a teacher named Kukuraja.

When Garab Dorje died, his body turned into a mist of rainbow light. Before he left, he gave a final gift to Manjushrimitra. It was a tiny golden casket the size of a thumbnail. Inside were the "Three Words that Strike to the Heart of the Essential Point." These words are the core of Dzogchen wisdom. They help people recognize the mind and find confidence. Several books are also linked to him, such as "Vajra Fortress."
