It is also called Ngagyur, which means "ancient." This tradition is special because it uses the first translations of Buddhist scriptures. These books were moved from Pali and Sanskrit into the Tibetan language. The Nyingma way of thinking is very old and deep. It includes many unique teachings that set it apart from other groups. Many people find its ancient roots very interesting to study.

How does the Nyingma tradition work? It uses a special way to group its teachings called the Nine Yanas. These are nine different paths or "vehicles" used to reach liberation. One of the most important parts is called Dzogchen, or the "Great Perfection."

Nyingma followers believe Dzogchen is the most direct path to becoming a Buddha. They also have a tradition of finding hidden treasure texts called Termas. These are special books found by people called tertöns. These treasures are revealed only when the conditions are right.

The history of Nyingma began in the eighth century.

Three important leaders helped start this tradition in Tibet. They are known as Khen Lop Chos Sum. These leaders were Khenpo Shantarakshita, Guru Padmasambhava, and King Trisong Detsen. They worked together on a huge project to translate texts. This project included 108 translators and 25 close disciples of Padmasambhava. They even built the very first Buddhist monastery in Tibet at a place called Samye.

There were hard times for the Nyingma school in the past.

Between the years 836 and 842, King Langdarma ruled Tibet. He saw Buddhism as a threat to the local Bön tradition. Because of this, he tried to stop the practice of Buddhism. Many monks and nuns had to go underground to stay safe. Later, in the eleventh century, new teachers helped bring Buddhism back. Writers like Rongzom helped defend the old Nyingma texts during this time.

Many famous thinkers helped shape the Nyingma school over the centuries.

He created a system of teaching called Longchen Nyingthig. This is still one of the most common ways people learn Dzogchen today. The tradition continues to grow through many different monasteries and teachers.
