It began in the eighth century. Three leaders helped start this tradition. One was King Trisong Detsen. The others were teachers named Padmasambhava and Shantarakshita. They worked to turn holy books into the Tibetan language. They also built the first monastery at Samye.

Nyingma followers have special ways of learning. One way is called Dzogchen. They believe Dzogchen is a very direct path. They also have a tradition of finding hidden texts. These texts are called Termas. People who find them are called tertöns.

These tertöns find the books when the time is right. This helps the school grow with new teachings.

In the past, things were hard for Nyingma. A king named Langdarma tried to stop Buddhism. Many monks and nuns had to hide. But the tradition did not end. Later, new teachers helped it grow again. Writers like Rongzom helped defend the old ways.
