In Tibetan Buddhism, some people find hidden treasures. These people are called tertöns. Long ago, a teacher named Padmasambhava and his partner Yeshe Tsogyal hid special teachings. They wanted to help people in a dark future time. These treasures are called terma.

Tertöns find these treasures at the right time and place. They might find them in rocks or water. Some find them in their own minds. Terma can be holy books or even statues. These teachings can be simple or very deep.

Many tertöns were followers of Padmasambhava. Some were even known as the "five tertön kings." These important men lived at different times. Many women have been tertöns, too. Some were seen as part of Yeshe Tsogyal. One famous woman was Jomo Menmo.

Other schools also have tertöns. The 5th Dalai Lama was one. He found teachings through his visions. A tertön's job is to bring these new ideas to the world. This helps many people in their faith.
