Many people in the Vajrayana and Mahayana traditions follow her. Her name can mean "star" or "planet." Just as a star helps travelers, Tara helps people find their way. Because of this, she is often called a "savioress" or a rescuer.

There are many different forms of Tara. Each form has its own color and special job.

Green Tara is very popular in Tibetan Buddhism. She helps with many good activities. White Tara is known for healing and kindness. Red Tara is linked to power. Some people also see her as a forest goddess.

There are many stories about how she began. One story says she grew from a blue lotus. This flower grew from the tears of a kind man. Another story tells of a princess. This princess vowed to always be reborn as a woman. She wanted to help all living beings.
