He lived a long time ago. Some scholars believe he lived in the late 8th century. He was a key founder of Vajrayana Buddhism. This is a type of Buddhist tradition.

Many stories tell of his teachers. One story is about the Arrow Making Dakini. A dakini is a female spiritual being. She taught Saraha that truth is found in actions. She was not found in books. Because of her, Saraha is often shown holding an arrow.

Another story tells of the Radish Curry Dakini. Saraha sat in deep meditation for twelve years. When he finished, he asked for radish curry. The woman's wise reply helped him learn. She taught him that a clear mind is best.

Saraha wrote many kinds of poems. These include songs called doha and vajragiti.
