Marpa wanted to learn more about his faith. He traveled to Nepal and India to find wise teachers. He even used his family gold to pay for these trips. Marpa spent twelve years studying with many masters. One great teacher was named Naropa. Marpa also studied with Maitripa and Niguma. Naropa said that Marpa would carry on his teachings. This started a group called the Kagyu lineage. Some people call it Marpa Kagyu to honor him. When Marpa went home, he translated holy books. He turned them into the Tibetan language. This helped his people learn. He also taught many students. One of his famous students was Milarepa. Marpa also helped start Stongdey Monastery in 1052. His teachings included ways to understand dreams. He was a very important part of history.
