Marpa's journey to learn was a very big task. He was born in Lhodrak in southern Tibet to a wealthy family. As a young boy, he was known for being wild and untamed. He studied Sanskrit for three years at Mangkhar to learn the language. To pay for his travels, he turned his family inheritance into gold. He used this gold to travel to Nepal and India. He even worked as a servant for a man named Nyo Lōtsawa.

Marpa spent many years searching for wise masters to teach him. He first studied with two famous students named Paindapa and Chitherpa. Later, he went to Pullahari near Nalanda University to find the teacher Naropa. Marpa spent twelve years studying with Naropa and other gurus. He also learned from teachers named Maitripa and Niguma. One time, Naropa was hard to find because he was busy with his own practices. Eventually, Marpa found him and received the final instructions he needed.

There are many important facts about Marpa's success and legacy. Naropa named Marpa his successor after he received the full teachings. This was special because Naropa had other major disciples too. When Marpa returned to Tibet, he worked as a translator. He turned many Buddhist scriptures from Sanskrit into the Tibetan language. He also helped start Stongdey Monastery in Zanskar in 1052 CE. Marpa lived in Lhodrak with his wife, Dakmema, and their sons.

Marpa's teachings still connect to many things people study today. He taught a system called the Six Teachings of Naropa. This included special ways to work with lucid dreaming. He also taught the Great Seal, which is also called Mahamudra. One of his most famous students was a man named Milarepa. After Marpa's son, Darma Dode, passed away, Milarepa inherited the full lineage. Marpa's work helped spread the dharma throughout all of Tibet.
