Stories tell us how he helped bring Buddhism to Tibet. In the 8th century, King Trisong Detsen invited him there. The king also invited a philosopher named Śāntarakṣita. Together, they helped build Samye. This was the very first Buddhist monastery in Tibet.

They even worked to translate Buddha's teachings into the Tibetan language. This helped create the Tibetan Canon. Padmasambhava is also known for his magical and ritual powers. He used these powers to tame local spirits. He turned these spirits into protectors of the faith.

Many different stories describe his early life. One story says he appeared as an eight-year-old child. He was found in a lotus blossom in Lake Dhanakosha. Another story says he was born to Queen Jalendra in Oddiyana. He was sometimes called Dorje Duddul. This name means "Vajra Demon Subjugator."

Some stories say he was exiled from his home. He then traveled to practice his teachings in India. He even taught a princess named Mandarava at Rewalsar Lake.

Another important person was Orgyen Lingpa. In the 14th century, he wrote the Lotus Testament. This book describes the "11 deeds" of Padmasambhava. Some say there are even 9,999 biographies of him. These books help people learn about his life and work.

Padmasambhava left behind many special things for the future. He is said to have hidden secret texts called terma. These are treasure texts. People called tertöns are treasure finders. They are said to find these texts when the time is right.

Padmasambhava might appear to these finders in visions. His teachings include an oral tradition called kama. These ideas connect the past to the present. Today, his life and teachings are still very important to many Buddhists around the world.
