Padmasambhava is a central figure in the history of Tibetan Buddhism. His name means "Born from a Lotus." Many followers call him Guru Rinpoche, which translates to "Precious Guru." He is viewed as a semi-legendary tantric Buddhist Vajra master. Some traditions believe he is an emanation, or Nirmāṇakāya, of the Buddha Shakyamuni. This means he is a physical form of the Buddha foretold by the Buddha himself. He is particularly important to the Nyingma school, which is known as the "Ancients."

The arrival of Padmasambhava in Tibet is a major historical narrative. During the 8th century, King Trisong Detsen reigned over Tibet. The king invited the Indian philosopher Śāntarakṣita to help spread Buddhism. However, local events like lightning strikes and flooding caused unrest. Some people believed local gods were angry with the new faith. To address this, the king brought Padmasambhava from Oddiyana to Tibet. Padmasambhava used his ritual powers to tame local spirits. Once these spirits were subdued, they became guardians of the Buddhist Dharma. This process allowed the construction of Samye, the first Buddhist monastery in Tibet.

Padmasambhava and his companions played a role in organizing Buddhist knowledge. He, King Trisong Detsen, and Khenpo Shantarakshita helped create the Tibetan Canon. This involved translating all of the Buddha's teachings and commentaries into Tibetan. The Testament of Ba is one of the earliest chronicles of these events. While some early scholars questioned his historical authenticity, many modern researchers now cautiously accept his existence. Some people even point to marks in rocks believed to be his footprints as physical evidence. His teachings include an oral lineage called kama and a lineage of hidden texts.

There are many different stories regarding his birth and early life. One hagiography, the Zangling-ma, describes him appearing as an eight-year-old child in a lotus blossom. This occurred in Lake Dhanakosha within the kingdom of Oddiyana. Another tradition says he was born to Queen Jalendra. In this version, he was named Dorje Duddul, meaning "Vajra Demon Subjugator." Some stories state he was the son of King Indrabhuti. After an incident involving his staff, he was exiled and practiced tantra in India. During this time, he taught the princess Mandarava at Rewalsar Lake.

The development of the Padmasambhava mythos became very influential over time. Starting around the 12th century, many hagiographies were written about him. Nyangral Nyima Özer wrote the earliest full biography, titled The Copper Palace. Later, in the 14th century, Orgyen Lingpa expanded these narratives. He wrote the Lotus Testament, which details the "11 deeds" of Padmasambhava. This work refers to him as a "second Buddha." Some traditions suggest there are as many as 9,999 biographies of him. These accounts are categorized by his different spiritual natures: Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya, and Nirmanakaya.

A unique aspect of his legacy is the system of terma, or hidden treasure texts. Padmasambhava is said to have concealed these secret texts for future use. They are intended to be found by fortunate beings called tertöns. These treasure finders are believed to discover the texts when conditions are ripe. Padmasambhava is said to appear to these tertöns during visionary encounters. In the Nyingma school, practitioners also visualize his form during guru yoga practice. This connection keeps his teachings active in the present day.
