The name of this group has a very special meaning. The first part, "ka," refers to the words of the Buddha. The second part, "gyu," means a lineage or a tradition. Together, the name means a line of instructions passed down by speaking. This group is sometimes called the "Golden Rosary" lineage. This name represents a long line of teachers and students.

Learning in this tradition happens in many different steps. One very important way to practice is called Mahamudra. This is often called the "Great Seal." It uses four main stages of meditation to help people. The first stage is finding a single-pointed mind. The second stage is moving past all simple thoughts. The third stage is seeing that all things have a "single taste." The final stage is a state beyond any effort.

The history of the Karma Kagyu began a long time ago. It was founded by a man named Düsum Khyenpa. He was the very first Karmapa Lama. The Karmapa is the spiritual leader of this group. Followers believe the Buddha predicted these leaders would appear. This idea is found in the Samadhiraja Sutra. The leaders are also known for wearing a famous black crown. Because of these crowns, people call them "Black Hat" lamas.
