The name Sakya means "pale earth" in Tibetan. This name comes from the grey landscape of the Ponpori Hills in southern Tibet. Near Shigatse, the first Sakya monastery was built in 1073. Khon Konchog Gyalpo was the person who built this original seat. This school is also known as one of the Red Hat Orders. It belongs to a group that includes the Nyingma and Kagyu traditions.

The Sakya tradition grew during a time when people translated Buddhist texts. This involved moving scripture from Sanskrit into the Tibetan language. A famous scholar named Drogmi helped lead this work. He spent twelve years studying in India under great teachers. He was a very skilled translator and scholar. Drogmi taught many important ideas to his students. One of his students was Khon Konchog Gyalpo. This helped the tradition take root in Tibet.

Many important masters helped build the Sakya school over the years. The tradition was established by five masters known as the Five Venerable Supreme Masters. The first of these was Sachen Kunga Nyingpo. He was the grandson of Khon Konchog Gyalpo. Other famous thinkers include the scholar Sakya Pandita. He was known for writing many influential books on reasoning. He also wrote about the three vows. Many other scholars are called the Six Ornaments of Tibet.

The leadership of the Sakya school follows a special family line. This is a hereditary system within the Khon family. The leaders are chosen from the male members of this branch. The head of the school is called the Sakya Trizin. This title means "holder of the Sakya throne." The current Sakya Trizin is named Gyana Vajra. He is the forty-third person to hold this important office. This family system has lasted for a very long time.

In history, the Sakya school held a lot of power. In 1264, a leader named Drogön Chögyal Phagpa was given rule over Tibet. This happened under the Yuan dynasty and the Mongol Empire. Phagpa worked with the founder of the Yuan dynasty, Kublai Khan. Sakya leaders served as administrators for nearly 75 years after Phagpa died in 1280. Today, the Sakya tradition is found all over the world. Some followers even helped build the first Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the United States. It is a tradition that connects ancient history to modern life.
