He lived from 1079 to 1153. As a young man, he studied medicine. He learned from Tibetan, Chinese, and Indian ways. Later, he became a monk. He took this path after his wife and child died.

Gampopa was the main student of a teacher named Milarepa. He joined two different ways of thinking. He mixed the Kadam teachings with the Kagyu teachings. This helped him start the Dagpo Kagyu school. He also built the Daklha Gampo Monastery in 1121.

Gampopa wrote many important books. His most famous book is called the Jewel Ornament of Liberation. He also taught the "Four Dharmas." These ideas help people turn confusion into wisdom. He taught that people should use kindness and compassion. He also taught people to think about how things change. Many schools of thought came from his work. These include the Barom, Phagdru, Karma, and Tsalpa Kagyu. His ideas still help many people today.
