Jamphel Gyatso was the 8th Dalai Lama of Tibet. He was born in 1758. His parents were from a place called Kham. When he was only five years old, he became a leader. He was crowned in the Potala Palace. Since he was young, a Regent helped him lead. A Regent is a person who rules for someone else.

In 1783, he built Norbulingka Park. He also built a Summer Palace there. Jamphel Gyatso also had a copper statue made. This statue was of the Buddha. It was a gift for the people of Southern Tibet.

During his life, there was a conflict with Nepal. Soldiers from Nepal invaded parts of Tibet. They took some cities and a monastery. Later, troops from the Qing dynasty arrived. These troops helped drive the invaders back.

Jamphel Gyatso was a quiet and calm man. He did not care much for ruling. He mostly let the Regent handle the work. He lived until 1804. He was 47 years old when he died.
