He is known as the 2nd Dalai Lama. He was born in 1475 to a farming family. His father was a famous master in his faith.

When he was a small boy, people said he was reborn. This means they believed he was the same person as a past leader. He told his parents he wanted to live with monks. At age eleven, he was placed on a throne at Tashilhunpo monastery. Later, he moved to Lhasa to study at Drepung monastery.

Gedun Gyatso was a smart scholar. He also wrote mystical poems. He was the leader, or abbot, of many large monasteries. He even started a big prayer festival in 1518.

He spent time near a sacred lake called Lhamo Latso. He built a monastery near this lake in 1509. Many monks go to this lake to seek guidance through visions. They do this while they meditate. Gedun Gyatso died in 1542 while he was in deep meditation. He was 67 years old.
