People in Tibet believed he was a reborn soul. This means he was the same soul as the 6th Dalai Lama. He was born in a place called Litang. A monk identified him as the true leader. This was a hard time for the young boy. He went to a monastery to stay safe and learn. He became a monk when he was twelve years old.

Kelzang Gyatso was a very smart scholar. He was a great writer and a poet. He wrote seven volumes of books. These books held his religious poems and teachings. In 1751, he helped change how Tibet was led. He helped start a group called the Kashag. This was a council of ministers to help run the land. He lived until 1757.
