His life was full of big changes for his country. He was known as a great scholar and a talented poet. His written works are very large and spread across seven volumes. These books include religious poems and many deep teachings.

His life began in a place called Litang. This area is in Eastern Tibet, also known as Kham. At that time, another person held the throne in Lhasa. A monk at a monastery in Litang identified the young boy as the true leader. This was a very difficult and dangerous time for the child. To keep him safe, he was taken to a monastery for training. In 1715, the Kangxi Emperor helped him enter Kumbum Monastery. This was a very big and public event for the people.

Kelzang Gyatso became a monk when he was twelve years old. He was a child prodigy with a very deep wisdom. He was famous for writing poems very quickly without any help. He even traveled to central Tibet to speak to thousands of people. He studied many hard subjects like sutra and tantra. He learned from many great teachers and leaders. He became a master of these religious ideas through his hard work.

There were many battles and changes in Tibet during his time. In 1717, a group called the Dzungars invaded the land. They removed the leader in Lhasa and caused much trouble. Later, in 1720, forces from the Kangxi Emperor helped remove them. Kelzang Gyatso was brought to Lhasa and became the Dalai Lama in 1721. He faced more hard times during a civil war in 1727. He was even sent away to his hometown for a few years. He finally returned to the Potala Palace in 1735.

In 1751, the way Tibet was governed changed quite a bit. Kelzang Gyatso helped start a group called the Kashag. This was a council of ministers that helped run the government. Some say he did this to stop one person from having too much power. He also helped build new places like the Norling Kalsang Phodrang palace. He even helped create a beautiful monastery roof in Bhutan. His life left a lasting mark on the history of his people.
