He was enthroned at the Potala Palace in 1879. However, he did not take full political power until 1895.

During his studies, he met a man named Agvan Dorzhiev. Dorzhiev was a tutor and a debating partner for the young leader. This friendship helped the Dalai Lama connect with other countries like Russia.

His life was shaped by many difficult times and travels. In 1904, he had to flee Tibet during a British expedition. He traveled for four months to reach Urga in Mongolia. While there, he met the spiritual leader of Outer Mongolia.

Later, in 1910, he had to leave Tibet again because of a Chinese invasion. He spent two years living in exile in Sikkim and India. These trips taught him how important foreign relations are for his country.

Thubten Gyatso was a very skillful politician and a reformer. He wanted to modernize Tibet and change how the government worked. He gave more power to regular officials instead of just the monks. This helped balance the power in the land. He also worked to rebuild Tibet's place in the world. He was known for being an intellectual leader who understood global politics.

He is often called "the Great Thirteenth" by many people. In 1912, he helped declare Tibet as an independent country. When he returned to Lhasa in 1913, he took full leadership. He refused to accept ranks from the new Chinese government. Instead, he focused on leading his own people. He led Tibet through a very busy and changing era of history.
