Yonten Gyatso was a very important leader. He served as the 4th Dalai Lama. Most Dalai Lamas were Tibetan. However, Yonten Gyatso was a Mongol. This made him quite unique in history.

Two oracles predicted his birth. These were people who gave messages. They said the next leader would be born in Mongolia. This helped people know who to look for. He was the son of Tsultrim Choeje. His father was the Khan of the Chokur tribe.

His journey to Tibet was a very big event. He left Mongolia in 1599. He was only ten years old then. He traveled with his father and many monks. A thousand Mongol cavalrymen went with them too.

They stopped at many large monasteries on the path. They finally arrived in Tibet in 1603. In Lhasa, he was officially made the 4th Dalai Lama. Sangen Rinchen performed the ceremony for him. This was a major moment for his faith.

Learning was a huge part of his life. He studied at the Drepung Monastery. He learned from the 4th Panchen Lama. This teacher was named Lobsang Chökyi Gyaltsen.

In 1614, he became a full monk. This is called full ordination. Later, he became the leader of two places. He was the abbot of Drepung. He also led the Sera monastery. These were very important roles for him.

Life was often hard for the young leader. Not all Tibetans accepted him. Some people wanted to take his power.

In 1605, a prince drove Mongol soldiers out of Lhasa. Later, warriors attacked the Drepung monastery. Yonten Gyatso had to run away to stay safe. He hid in caves near Sangyib Hot Springs. These springs are famous for a footprint. The footprint was left by Padmasambhava long ago.

He died in January 1617. He was only 27 years old. Some people think he was poisoned. However, there is no real evidence for this.

His main helper was named Sonam Rapten. Sonam was a very important person too. He later helped find the 5th Dalai Lama. He also served as a regent. This means he helped rule for the next leader. His life changed how people saw the link between Mongols and Tibet.
