He was born on January 2, 1508. He was the grandson of Dayan Khan. His family was part of a famous line from Kublai Khan. Altan ruled a group called the Tümed Mongols. He also led the western tribes of the Mongols. His lands were located in what is now Inner Mongolia.

Altan Khan worked hard to make his group strong. He wanted to trade horses with the Ming dynasty in China. He hoped to get silk and food in return. At first, the Chinese leaders were suspicious of him. They sometimes stopped his messengers from trading. Because of this, Altan led raids into northern China in 1529, 1530, and 1542. He even reached the suburbs of Beijing in 1550. Later, he made a peace deal with the Ming emperor. The emperor gave him the title of Shunyi prince.

Altan Khan was also a builder of cities. He founded a city called Köke Khota. This name means "The Blue City." Today, this place is known as Hohhot. It is the capital of the Inner Mongolia region in China. He also helped his people grow by welcoming refugees. These people helped build up the economy of the Tümed Mongols. He even took control of the old Mongol capital, Karakorum, in 1552.

Altan Khan became very interested in the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. In 1577, a teacher named Sonam Gyatso visited his lands. Altan Khan gave him the title "Dalai," which means "ocean." This was the start of the Dalai Lama title. The teacher taught that people should not take lives. He helped end violent customs like animal sacrifices. Within 50 years, most Mongols had become Buddhists.

Altan Khan died on January 13, 1582. He was about 74 or 75 years old. His work changed the religion and the culture of his people forever. His family remained important in the history of the Mongols. For example, his great-grandson became the 4th Dalai Lama in 1601. In 2011, a statue of Altan Khan was finished in Hohhot. It stands in front of the Dazhao Temple. This temple was something he ordered to be built in 1579.
