history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Northern Yuan was a state on the Mongolian Plateau. It started after the Yuan dynasty lost control of China in 1368.

This happened because of floods and a big rebellion. A leader named Zhu Yuanzhang started the Ming dynasty in southern China. The Ming army moved on the capital city of Dadu. The Mongol ruler Toghon Temür had to flee north to the grasslands. He died in 1370 in a place called Yingchang. After this, the Mongols moved to Karakorum. They kept using the name "Great Yuan" to show they were still important.

Life in the Northern Yuan was often divided. Different groups of Mongols lived in different areas. There were the Oirats in the west and the Eastern Mongols.

For a long time, many leaders had very little real power. Some were just figureheads, which means others made the real choices. These powerful leaders were often called warlords. The Ming dynasty often fought with the Mongols. Sometimes they had peaceful trade, but other times they had big wars. One famous battle happened in 1409 at the Kherlen River. In that battle, the Mongols defeated a large Ming army.

One group called the Oirats became very strong during this time. Their leader, Esen Taishi, ruled from 1438 to 1454. He was a very powerful man. In 1449, he led his army against the Ming. He won a huge victory at the Tumu Crisis. During this event, he even captured the Ming emperor.

However, Esen Taishi did not take the Ming capital of Beijing. After his time of power, the Mongol groups changed again. Many leaders fought for control over the different tribes.

Later, things began to come together again. In the late 15th century, Dayan Khan and Mandukhai Khatun worked to help. They reunited most of the Mongol tribes.

This helped stop some of the fighting between groups. During these years, a new religion became very important. Tibetan Buddhism spread through Mongol society. This changed how many people lived and what they believed.

The Northern Yuan lasted for a very long time. It stayed around from 1368 until 1635. The end came when the Later Jin dynasty conquered them. The Later Jin was led by the Jurchen people. Later, this group changed its name to the Qing dynasty.

The history of the Northern Yuan shows how people can stay connected to their past. Even when they lost their old lands, they kept their titles. They also kept their identity as the "Great Mongol State." This long period helped shape the Mongolia we know today.
