This empire was very large and ruled many different groups of people. At its highest point, the land stretched from the Sea of Japan to the Pamir Mountains. It also reached from the Mongolian Plateau down to the South China Sea. In 1907, the empire was home to over 426 million citizens.

This made it the most populous state in the world at that time.

The story of the Qing began with a leader named Nurhaci. He was the chieftain of the Jianzhou Jurchen people. Nurhaci worked to unify many different clans together. He also created a military system called the Eight Banners.

After Nurhaci died in 1626, his son Hong Taiji took over. In 1636, Hong Taiji was declared the Emperor of the Great Qing. He even built his own group of soldiers to use new types of cannons. He also set up a government with six different boards to manage the land.

As time went on, the empire saw many great leaders. The Kangxi Emperor ruled from 1661 to 1722. He helped the population and the economy grow. He also supported scholarship and Buddhism.

Later, the Qianlong Emperor ruled from 1735 to 1796. During his time, the empire reached its peak of power. He led many military campaigns to expand the territory. These leaders helped the Qing become a very strong and famous empire.

However, the dynasty later faced many difficult challenges. Internal revolts and economic problems made things hard for the government. Foreign countries like the United Kingdom and France also arrived. They forced the Qing to sign unequal treaties to get trading rights.

There were also very large rebellions in China. The Taiping Rebellion and the Dungan Revolt caused many deaths from war and disease. These events made the empire much weaker than it used to be.

By the end of the 1800s, the empire was changing fast. People debated how to make the country more modern.

There were attempts at reform, but they often failed. In 1911, a movement called the Xinhai Revolution began. This led to the last emperor stepping down in February 1912. The end of the Qing dynasty meant that the era of emperors was over. It was replaced by the Republic of China.
