The Qin dynasty was the first imperial dynasty in China.

It began as a small state belonging to the Zhou dynasty. For many centuries, the Qin was only a minor power. Everything changed in the 4th century BC because of a man named Shang Yang. He introduced important military and administrative reforms. These changes helped the state create a strong, central government. They also built a large army supported by a stable economy. This growth set the stage for the Qin to become a great power.

To make the empire strong, the Qin changed how things worked. They created standard rules for money, weights, and measures. They also made everyone use the same writing system. This helped people across different lands communicate better. The government also worked to control the land and the people directly. They used the labor of hundreds of thousands of peasants and convicts. These people worked on huge projects like a large national road system. They even connected walls along the northern border to form the Great Wall.

History shows how the Qin rose to power through many wars. Starting in 230 BC, a leader named Ying Zheng fought rival states. He first attacked the state of Han and took its capital. Then he defeated Zhao in 228 BC and Yan in 226 BC. He continued his march to take the Wei capital in 225 BC. By 223 BC, the state of Chu had surrendered to him. Finally, he conquered Qi in 221 BC to unify the land.

Ying Zheng then declared himself Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor.

Life under the first emperor included amazing and massive creations. He built a city-sized tomb called the Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang. This tomb was guarded by a huge collection of life-sized clay soldiers.

The emperor also used new weapons and better transportation. He even made a canal to help his troops move south. These tools allowed the Qin to change the environment in huge ways. Even the money used by the people was standardized.

Despite its great power, the Qin dynasty was very short. It lasted only 14 years, which is the shortest major dynasty in Chinese history. After Qin Shi Huang died in 210 BC, the empire began to fail. Two advisors tried to control the throne, but they fought with each other. This led to the deaths of the advisors and the second emperor. Popular revolts broke out, and the empire fell to generals named Xiang Yu and Liu Bang.

However, the next Han dynasty kept many Qin systems. The imperial system the Qin started lasted for a very long time.
