It began as a small state belonging to the Zhou dynasty. For many centuries, the Qin was only a minor power. Everything changed in the 4th century BC because of a man named Shang Yang. He introduced important military and administrative reforms. These changes helped the state create a strong, central government. They also built a large army supported by a stable economy. This growth set the stage for the Qin to become a great power.

To make the empire strong, the Qin changed how things worked. They created standard rules for money, weights, and measures. They also made everyone use the same writing system. This helped people across different lands communicate better. The government also worked to control the land and the people directly. They used the labor of hundreds of thousands of peasants and convicts. These people worked on huge projects like a large national road system. They even connected walls along the northern border to form the Great Wall.

Despite its great power, the Qin dynasty was very short. It lasted only 14 years, which is the shortest major dynasty in Chinese history. After Qin Shi Huang died in 210 BC, the empire began to fail. Two advisors tried to control the throne, but they fought with each other. This led to the deaths of the advisors and the second emperor. Popular revolts broke out, and the empire fell to generals named Xiang Yu and Liu Bang. However, the next Han dynasty kept many Qin systems. It began as a small fiefdom under the confederal Zhou dynasty. For many centuries, the state of Qin was considered a minor power. This changed during the 4th century BC due to the reforms of a statesman named Shang Yang. He introduced administrative and military reforms to build a centralized state. These changes created a strong army and a stable economy. This foundation allowed the Qin to transform from a small territory into a massive empire.

The Qin rose to power through a specific set of military and political mechanisms. They utilized advanced weaponry and superior transportation to move troops across different terrains. Their geography provided a natural advantage in the Guanzhong region. This area featured fertile farmland and mountains that acted as a stronghold. Unlike other states, the Qin disregarded traditional ideas of gentlemanly warfare. They practiced a more practical and ruthless style of combat to gain advantages. This approach, combined with efficient leadership, helped them dominate their neighbors.

During the Warring States period, seven major states competed for dominance. These states were Qin, Yan, Zhao, Qi, Chu, Han, and Wei.

The Qin began a series of successful conquests starting in 230 BC. They first took the capital of Han in 230 BC. They then defeated Zhao in 228 BC and Yan in 226 BC. In 225 BC, they captured the Wei capital of Daliang. By 223 BC, the state of Chu had surrendered. Finally, they conquered Qi in 221 BC. This series of victories ended the Warring States period and unified China.

Upon unification, King Ying Zheng took the title Qin Shi Huang. This title means 'First Emperor.'

He established an imperial system that would influence China for centuries. To solidify control, he ordered the confiscation of all weapons not held by the state. The melted metal was used to create twelve large ornamental statues. He also replaced the old nobility with appointed officials. This allowed the central government to administer the peasantry directly. This system helped the state manage huge numbers of people and resources.

The Qin dynasty implemented massive standardization projects to unify the empire. They created a single system for currency, weights, and measures.

They also enforced a standardized writing system so everyone could communicate. These reforms supported large-scale construction projects using hundreds of thousands of laborers. They connected northern walls to form the early Great Wall of China. They also built a large national road system. One notable project was the Wei River canal, engineered by Zheng Guo in 246 BC. These efforts showed an unprecedented capacity to transform the environment.

One of the most famous examples of Qin power is the Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang. This city-sized tomb is guarded by the Terracotta Army.

The empire also expanded southward toward the Baiyue peoples. In 214 BC, the Qin sent 500,000 men to conquer these southern territories. Although they faced difficult jungle terrain, they eventually secured coastal lands like Guangzhou. This expansion significantly increased the size and reach of the empire.

Despite its massive achievements, the Qin dynasty was remarkably short-lived. It lasted only 14 years, making it the shortest major dynasty in Chinese history. The empire began to collapse following the death of Qin Shi Huang in 210 BC. Two advisors attempted to seize power by placing an heir on the throne. Their internal fighting led to the deaths of both advisors and the second emperor. This instability caused widespread popular revolts. The empire eventually fell to the generals Xiang Yu and Liu Bang. Liu Bang later founded the Han dynasty, which continued many Qin administrative practices.
