Many people still study their ideas today. Their rule changed how people thought about power and leadership.

To rule such a huge area, the Zhou used a system called fengjian. This was a way to manage land by giving parts of it to others.

If a ruler was unfair or bad, the Mandate would be taken away. This encouraged kings to care for their people to keep their power.

Long ago, stories say the Zhou lineage began with a hero named Qi. He was known as the "Lord of Millet" because he helped improve farming.

The Zhou dynasty was a royal house that ruled China for 789 years. This period lasted from approximately 1046 BC until 256 BC. It remains the longest-lasting dynasty in Chinese history.

The dynasty began when the Zhou people established control over the Wei River valley and the North China Plain. Their rule shaped the political, cultural, and philosophical foundations of China for centuries. Even after the kings lost actual power, their political systems continued to influence the region.

The dynasty is divided into two major eras: the Western Zhou and the Eastern Zhou. The Western Zhou period began around 1045 or 1046 BC. During this time, the royal house held strong military and political control.

The Eastern Zhou period began in 771 BC after the capital was moved eastward. In this second era, the king's authority became mostly ceremonial.

The Eastern Zhou is further split into the Spring and Autumn period and the Warring States period.

To manage their vast territories, the Zhou utilized a system called fengjian. This was a decentralized method of governing through land grants. The kings gave parts of their territory to various nobles or relatives. This helped expand the kingdom but also created many local power centers. Over generations, the familial ties between the kings and these regional lords weakened. This caused the central authority of the Zhou to decline as peripheral territories grew more independent.

The Zhou introduced a vital political doctrine known as the Mandate of Heaven. This concept suggested that the heavens granted the right to rule to a morally worthy leader. The ruler was expected to maintain harmony and honor to keep this divine support. If a ruler became corrupt or failed to care for the people, the Mandate would be withdrawn. This idea provided a religious justification for regime change. It forced rulers to acknowledge that their power was tied to their moral conduct.

According to mythology, the Zhou lineage started with a culture hero named Qi. He was known as the "Lord of Millet" for his work in improving agriculture.

Historical accounts describe how King Wen prepared the way for the dynasty. His son, King Wu, led an army of 45,000 men and 300 chariots to victory. This occurred at the Battle of Muye around 1046 BC. This victory allowed the Zhou to replace the previous Shang dynasty.

The latter part of the Zhou period was a golden age for Chinese thought. This era saw the rise of the Hundred Schools of Thought. Many scholars were patronized by rival lords to discuss different ways of living and ruling.

These ideas deeply influenced Chinese society and future imperial systems.

Cultural achievements also flourished, particularly in the craft of bronzeware. The Zhou period is often considered the zenith of Chinese bronze production.

They also saw significant changes in writing. The written language evolved from earlier oracle bone and bronze scripts into seal script. Eventually, an early form of clerical script began to emerge. These developments helped standardize communication across the various states.

The dynasty finally came to an end due to internal decline and external pressure. During the Warring States period, large-scale warfare broke out among former Zhou client states. The state of Qin eventually grew powerful enough to conquer the remaining territories. In 256 BC, Qin forces captured the Zhou capital of Wangcheng. This event extinguished the Zhou dynasty. Shortly after, in 221 BC, the Qin established the first imperial dynasty after conquering all of China.
