The Zhou dynasty was a royal family that ruled China for a very long time. It lasted for 789 years, from about 1046 BC until 256 BC. This was the longest period of any dynasty in Chinese history.

The Zhou people grew very strong in the Wei River valley and the North China Plain. They were known for making beautiful items out of bronze.

Many people still study their ideas today. Their rule changed how people thought about power and leadership.

To rule such a huge area, the Zhou used a system called fengjian. This was a way to manage land by giving parts of it to others.

The kings used this to keep control over many territories. They also used a famous idea called the Mandate of Heaven. This idea said that the sky gave the right to rule to good leaders.

If a ruler was unfair or bad, the Mandate would be taken away. This encouraged kings to care for their people to keep their power.

Long ago, stories say the Zhou lineage began with a hero named Qi. He was known as the "Lord of Millet" because he helped improve farming.

Later, a leader named King Wen helped prepare the way for the dynasty. His son, King Wu, led a large army to win a big battle.

This battle was called the Battle of Muye and it happened around 1046 BC. King Wu led 45,000 men and 300 chariots to win. This victory marked the official start of the Zhou dynasty.

As time passed, the dynasty split into two main parts. The first part was the Western Zhou, when the kings held most of the power.

The second part was the Eastern Zhou, which began in 771 BC. During this time, the kings became less powerful and held more ceremonial roles.

Small states began to fight for control during the Spring and Autumn period. Later, this became the Warring States period as large-scale wars broke out. Eventually, the state of Qin ended the Zhou rule in 256 BC.

Even though the kings lost power, the Zhou period was a golden age for ideas. Many famous philosophies started during this time.

These included Confucianism, Taoism, and Legalism. Scholars traveled to share these new ways of thinking.

The Zhou also changed how people wrote. They moved from using symbols on bones to a script called seal script. This helped create the foundations for the Chinese writing used for many years.
