The Warring States period was a busy and difficult time in Chinese history. It took place during the final centuries of the Zhou dynasty.

During this time, the Zhou kings were figureheads. This means they held titles but had no real power. Instead, many different states fought to control the land. These states used big armies to try and become the new leaders. The name of this era comes from an old history book called the Record of the Warring States.

Many different lands fought for control during these years. The most famous were the Seven Warring States.

Qin was located in the far west in the Wei River Valley. This spot helped protect them from other states. The three states of Han, Zhao, and Wei were once part of a larger land called Jin. Qi was located in the east on the Shandong Peninsula. Yan was in the northeast near modern-day Beijing. Chu was in the south near the Yangtze River. These states were often changing sides to gain an advantage.

History shows us how these states grew and changed. One important event was the partition of Jin. In 453 BC, the leaders of Han, Zhao, and Wei attacked the ruler of Jin. They won and split the land among themselves.

This helped start the era of many wars. Later, the rulers of Qi and Wei decided to act like independent leaders. In 344 BC, they both took the title of king. This showed they no longer felt they needed to follow the Zhou kings.

War was a major part of life, but people also made clever choices. In one famous battle, a strategist named Sun Bin used a smart plan. He helped the state of Qi win at the Battle of Guiling.

His plan was to attack the capital of Wei while their army was busy elsewhere. This is known as the strategy to "besiege Wei, save Zhao." Even during these wars, people thought about big ideas. The philosopher Mencius even visited the court of Wei to talk about life.

Eventually, one state became strong enough to win it all. The state of Qin used its position in the west to grow its power.

By 221 BC, Qin had conquered all the other competing states. This victory ended the Warring States period forever. Qin then started the Qin dynasty, which was the first imperial state in East Asian history. This change turned many small, fighting lands into one large empire. It was a massive shift in how people lived together.
